Is it Good Feng Shui to Live in a House facing and near to the Sea?

I have a client who is thinking of buying a house near the seashore and has asked for my opinion.

While the idea of living by the sea may sound idyllic, from a traditional Feng Shui perspective, a house that directly faces and is located close to the sea is generally not considered good Feng Shui, primarily due to unstable Qi in the external environment.

In Classical Feng Shui, the environment surrounding a home plays a crucial role in determining the quality of Qi that enters and accumulates in the space. Although Water represents wealth and opportunity, the key principle is stability of Qi accumulation. The sea, being constantly in motion with tides, waves, and shifting weather conditions, creates a dynamic but unsettled energetic field. This instability disrupts the ability of a home to gather and retain Prosperity Qi (生气), leading to weakening wealth, relationships, and health energies.

Also, homes too close to the shoreline may also be overly exposed to strong winds and moisture, which further weaken the stability of the energy field.

Furthermore, the absence of landforms like protective hills or mountains at the back of the property means there is no support or grounding force to anchor the home’s energy. Without this balance between Mountain (Support) and Water (Wealth), the Feng Shui foundation becomes weak.

While sea views may be beautiful, homes facing and close to the sea often suffer from unstable Qi caused by the ever-moving water. This makes it difficult to create a harmonious, supportive, and wealth-retaining environment — which is why it is generally not regarded as good Feng Shui for permanent residence.

That said, they can still be excellent choices for a short getaway or holiday home, where temporary enjoyment and relaxation take priority.
